Mindfulness didn't suddenly come into my life.
She crept in quietly.
In moments when I realized I was neglecting myself,
in order to function.
For me, mindfulness doesn't mean being constantly calm or balanced.
It means perceiving what is happening right now.
Unease, too. Impatience, too. Resistance, too.
For me, mindfulness often begins in a very unspectacular way.
One more breath.
A pause before I react.
An honest look inward, instead of immediately moving on.
I've learned that I don't need to optimize myself,
to be mindful.
It is enough to remain present.
To take me seriously – even when it gets uncomfortable.
Mindfulness is not a goal for me.
It is an attitude.
A decision to listen to myself.
and to meet myself at my own pace.
Some days go better than others.
And that's part of it too.
